Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo.Professor at the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Tokyo from 1998 to 2016. He leads research in the Department of Cellular Biochemistry and is involved in solving problems in the field of 'epigenetics', the study of DNA methylation, histone glycosylation and other chemical modifications of genetically-related substances. He joined the University of Tokyo in 1987 as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Agriculture. Prior to that, he worked for Takeda Pharmaceutical Company from 1979, completed his doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of Tokyo in 1979 and graduated from the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Miyazaki, in 1973. Apart from his position at the University of Tokyo, he has held positions at several research facilities, including Research Professor at the Research Institute of Science and Engineering, Waseda University.
